Instructor Bios

Rica has always been an artistic, creative person and a performer. She is a classically trained soprano, a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and is studying acting at the William Esper Studio. As a singer, she has performed all over the world and was a guest of honor at the White House for proclamation of black music month in the summer of 2001. Rica studied at the University of Michigan for voice and has a BA in film and video studies.

Shortly after moving to New York, she discovered the world of Pole Dancing and was instantly hooked. In October of 2010, Rica won first place in Polesque, a pole-burlesque competition at the Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn.

For her, pole dancing is the perfect combination of fitness and artistic expression because it requires a balance of strength, flexibility, grace and most importantly personality and attitude.

Why are you passionate about your dance style(s)?

I believe pole brings out something special out of every person. For me, I discovered a fire and passion for movement.

What is different about your class?

My class is high energy, positive environment where I support you as an individual and get you the results you want, be it strength, fluidity, or freedom.

How do you keep discouraged students motivated?

First, I remind them that pole is not simple and the results come from continuing the work. Everyone has the ability if they choose to believe they do.

What is your teaching philosophy, goal or focus in your class?

The focus for my classes is getting a great workout. I want to make my students sweat and move in ways that me them smile and be joyful.

Briefly describe the atmosphere at SHOCKra and what is class like every week.

Shockra is a safe and loving atmosphere where my classes become family.

How is your 6-week series different from other classes in the city and what will people gain by the end?

I strive to empower my students by helping them break past barriers, physical or mental. I care about my students and after 6 weeks they are my friends.
